My name is John Green. I’m 71 years old and recently retired from a long career in health care. I was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. I’ve lived in Rhode Island since 1974. Come this November, my lovely wife Nancy and I, will have been married 40 years. We live in the house where we first met. We are also the proud parents of one child, who’s also an artist.

Intro to the film
These days, we hear a lot about what’s called ‘critical race theory’. I can assure you, the issue of race and its impact on American life, is not a theory, but a well-established, institutionalized fact. Perhaps nowhere is this more apparent, than in the lengthy and convoluted history of our prohibitions, regarding interracial marriage.

I was just shy of my 16th birthday, when the Loving v. Virginia verdict was handed down. For me it was clearly, one of the signature bright spots in the 1960’s. Of course at the time, it never occurred to me, that I would one day find myself, so directly and so deeply affected by it. My younger sister Joyce and I, left our home state of Kentucky, for New England, on the very same day in 1974. She was bound for Dartmouth and I was off to grad school at RISD. Both of us, got our degrees; both of us, met our future spouses up here. Both of them, just also happened to be white. Although my sister and I never faced any legal jeopardy, this film, this love story, does rekindle a lot of memories, a lot of empathy and loads of gratitude.
