The film follows the sleepy life of a bachelor cowboy (Cumberbatch) who disapproves of his brother's (Plemons) new wife and son (Dunst, Smit-McPhee). But what begins as a Western turns into a full on drama and, at times, even a psychological thriller. That sounds dizzying—and it is—but the film itself remains grounded in good performances and damn fine directing. All four of its main stars were nominated, and Campion returns to the Best Director conversation 28 years after her last nomination for The Piano.
